[2014.05.06] Interview: Alice Nine - Time Out Singapore

Nao of Alice Nine’s interview with Time Out Singapore

Nao, the drummer of Japanese visual kei rock band Alice Nine, speaks to Wong Pei Ting (of Time Out Singapore) before they stop by our shores for their first Asia tour in celebration of their 10th year anniversary.

It’s been a decade since their debut in 2004, and iconic Japanese visual kei rockers Alice Nine have gradually shed their costume-y coat and glam rock style to reveal the band’s raw inclinations towards progressive rock and street fashion. But don’t be mistaken by their tamer stance. Alice Nine still don elaborate outfits, glamorous hairstyles and stunning make-up – just with a dapper twist, using Karl Lagerfeld, the creative director of Chanel and Fendi, as an inspiration. Their latest album, Supernova, which was released in March, shows the band’s more refined and experimental side with electronic and softer elements – sort of a bridled version of rock for gentlemen. Made up of Shou on vocals, Hiroto and Tora on guitar duties, bassist Saga and Nao on drums, the guys give us a little glimpse into their lives before their debut here.

–– Tell us about how you got together to form Alice Nine.
We started with jamming, and that’s when we began to understand each other’s styles and came to trust each other as band members. Naturally, we progressed to form a band.

–– How different are your musical preferences?
We have completely different styles! Some of us prefer rock, others lean towards hip hop.

–– Of your past and present albums, which song holds the best memories for you?
I think ‘Daybreak’ from our album Supernova represents the current Alice Nine best.

–– From your decade-long journey, what are some of the obstacles you’ve faced?
When we first started to work with an agency, we struggled with trying to communicate with the staff. However, we got over the problems over time. We realised that it was nothing much, and was actually part and parcel of the journey.

–– Any stand-out experiences from your tours?
Our guitarist Tora injured his neck during the tour, but he managed to pull through the performances and had even made it a successful tour.

–– What’s been the craziest thing to happen to the band?
Once, Tora climbed up a tree of a temple and ate a leaf when he was drunk.

–– When you finally have time to spare, what do you like to do?
Play the PSP and Nintendo DS, train in the gym or go café-hopping.

–– If all of you were stranded on a deserted island, who would be the first to give up and who would be the ultimate survivor?
Saga would be the first one to give up – he’s picky with his food. Hiroto would be the survivor – he’s a wild child within.

–– What you heard about our country and what are you most looking forward to for your first time here?
I have a picture of the Merlion in my head when I think about Singapore, but I am really looking forward to do some shopping.

–– What can we expect from your gig?
You’ll be sure to see us in hyper mode, since we are all excited to be performing overseas. Especially when this is a one-time show. We’ll do our usual best and have a blasting good time!
