[Interbyu] Shou x Tora x Nao - YinYueTai Interview

Shou: (in Chinese) Hello everyone, we are Alice Nine.

Q1: Please use some simple Chinese to say hello to the Chinese fans!

Shou: Shou.
Tora: (In Chinese) Hello everyone, Tora.
Nao: (In Chinese) Hello (waves), Nao.

Q2: This year is Alice Nine's 10th year coming together as a band. Firstly, congratulations!
After being in a band for so long, please describe your feelings about the past 10 years.

Shou: 10 years ago, we'd never thought of being able to come to China to perform so many lives in so many different areas. Now that we know that we have so many fans, we feel especially cherished and grateful.

Q3: Have you ever been to China? Seeing that most of the tour places are in China and before the Beijing live, you have gone to Shenzhen, Guangzhou and Wuhan, please talk about your impression on China! Have you been to the Great Wall? Have you eaten the Peking Duck?

Shou: Up until now, even for personal trips, we've never been to China. Despite this, China is still a rather familiar country to Japan. Personally, I like various Chinese works such as 'Records of The Three Kingdoms' and 'Legend of the Water Margin'. Therefore, we feel happy coming to China.

(Shou asks Tora and Nao) Eh, have you both gone to the Great Wall?

Tora: No, haven’t been there yet.

Shou: I see. But from now on, when we have the chance, we might visit these places. I would also like to try the Peking Duck.

Q4: We know that Alice Nine members are influenced by visual kei bands such as X-Japan and Luna Sea when they were young and that’s the reason why they found an interest in visual kei. Therefore, from forming the band in the beginning until now which has been 10 years, in your heart, do you think there’s any change in the concept of visual kei?

Shou: When you talk about visual rock, I feel that it focuses on the combination of visual elements with music. Big senpai bands such as X Japan and Luna Sea are a big influence on us.
Up until now, I feel like there weren't any changes in visual kei. Through this tour, we’d like to present the charms of visual rock to the Chinese fans.

Q5: Being in a band in 10 years, could you describe the importance of Alice Nine in your heart?

Nao: 10 years ago, before, I wasn't really sure how long this band would last. But now, I think that this band is my life.

Shou: Same for me. Alice Nine members are my family and my comrades. Having this kind of relationship with people other than my family, it’s amazing.

Tora: I have the same feeling as Shou-kun. After 10 years in the making, everyone is like family.

Q6: As a rock band, you often have to perform lives. Therefore, could each member talk about your individual habits before and after a live? ¹
Also, when you're not being a band member, in private life, what do you like to do during your free time?

Shou: Right, I'd like to expose Hiroto, our guitarist who is not present currently about his habits.
Before a live, he likes to do exercises.² As a rock star, this is an uncommon habit.

(Turning to Nao) Nao-san, what would you do before a live?

Nao: For me, I like to drink energy drinks. After that, I'd go to the toilet and (Makes a sound effect),
get rid of everything.

Shou: What does Tora-san like to do before a live? Your habits?

Tora: Not really a habit, but before a live, I'd drink beer.

Shou: This is what a rock star should do.

Q7: Since you have performed in so many lives in China, have you ever had the thought of using Chinese to perform a song one day? Normally, do you listen to Chinese rock bands or artists?

Shou: Yes, this time, using the opportunity of the tour, we collaborated with China's Super VC. Our newly collaborated song was specially performed using Chinese. To be honest, I don't know Chinese. However, after some practice, I would be performing this song in the Beijing live. Through this, I hope that we have the chance to familiarize with the different aspects of China. ³

Q8: Since you're going to so many places in China, which Chinese words have you learnt? Please show us some!

Shou: I've learnt one sentence which meant let’s sing together.
(Trying to pronounce in Chinese) Let's sing together.

Erm, the pronunciation is a little awkward. (laughs)

Nao: (imitating) Let's sing together.

(Shou laughs)

(Nao, still imitating) Let's sing together… Good! Mmmmm...... Hello everyone!

Shou: (laughs) Right, in the beginning, basically, I couldn't memorize any of the lyrics. However, after some hard work, I managed to memorize them.

(Interviewer teaches them a sentence in Chinese)

(Shou, Tora and Nao tried it out in Chinese)

All: Nǐ hǎo niú (You're awesome!)

Q9: Not only in Japan, now in China, there are a lot of young people forming their own bands. Towards these people who have the same music dream, could you use your experience from these past 10 years to motivate them?

Shou: Before, we've chatted with Super VC regarding this issue. Presently, Chinese rock bands are not in a very optimistic state. However, everyone try hard to achieve their own dreams and overcome all the difficulties. I hope that these rock bands would cherish the friendships between the members, and work hard in moving forward together.

Q10: Thank you very much for the interview! Lastly, could you please say something to the Chinese fans?

Shou: Presently, there are more and more people who like rock music or even Japan's visual rock music. Seriously, thank you very much.
In saying this, I'd like to convert our gratitude into music to return this love. Therefore, we would put in more effort. We hope to meet up with our fans often!
In the future, please do continue to support Alice Nine.

(In Chinese) Thank you.

Translator's note:
Finally finished my first translation!
I apologize for any awkward translation!

¹: The literal translation was asking if each member could expose their weird habits before and after lives, but it sounds awkward when translated so I decided to go with this instead.
² : Literal meaning was referring to gymnastics but I interpreted it as exercises.
³ : I’m not too sure what he meant.
