We can’t believe it’s taken them so long, but the Jap-rock band is finally having their first-ever Asian concert tour to celebrate their 10th anniversary! Nao from Alice Nine, reveals the band’s best memories and enduring quality in an email interview with Johanna Teo.
Alice Nine has had a long history! What has been your top three favorite moments?
-- The first was when we first performed live at the Nippon Budokan, where many famous live albums were recorded – including Bob Dylan and Ozzy Osbourne’s. Second, was when we produced our first album. Third, was when we performed live at Fuji-Q Highland Conifer Forest for our 10th anniversary!
So far, what’s been the band’s most stand-out song for you?
-- ‘Stargazer’, because the song is deep and meaningful for me and it’s about being understood.
What’s the inspiration behind ‘Supernova’, the album you released last month?
-- It’s to show more of our true selves, and about who we are.
What do you think is the band’s strength?
-- It’s got to be our ability to trust one another, and to have faith in one another.
But were there moments where you guys had conflicts?
-- We’ve had many big and small disagreements, and there were times where it took a lot of effort to understand the other party. I will try to understand where the other party is coming from.
Tell us a secret about your members that none of your fans know!
-- Shou really loves eating Japanese beef bowl (Gyudon). Hiroto is a deep sleeper – he can’t be woken up from his sleep!
What would you guys be doing if you were not in Alice Nine?
-- We’d most certainly still be making and playing music! Probably in another band, if not Alice Nine.
What do you think about the Hallyu (K-pop) wave that’s so big now?
-- It’s pervasive in Japan – even my mum is a fan!
If you could give yourself a piece of advice back when you debuted, what would it be?
-- It would be to spend more of the money earned on taking care of myself and to cherish more of the moments with people we meet along the away.
Before your concerts these days, are there special rituals you do before taking the stage?
-- For me, I would run through the flow of the performance again and again. Also, I would always have to go the gents prior to my performance.
Where do you see yourselves in another 10 years, and what do you hope to achieve by then?
-- Health is really important, and hopefully our fans will still love our music.
Imagine you’re building a time capsule to be opened a decade from now, what would you put in it and why?
-- Drums! Because it will be a vintage piece by then and it will definitely fetch a high price! (laughs)
If you could time travel, would you choose to go back into the past, stay in the present or head to the future?
-- The future! So that we continuously set the trend!
Is there anything you would like to express to your members?
-- “Let’s treat ourselves to a nice dinner!” and “Don’t give up on music!”
Could you sketch a pic for your Singaporean fans?
-- Pics of him “I’m hungry”
